Strep Throat of the Knee

No, I'm not being pithy. The above title is an actual medical diagnosis of my mother's current condition. On Thur. Jan. 10, my mom was sent to the ER (the third time in less than a week) regarding severe knee pain. That night she had emergency surgery on her knee and was admitted to the hospital. The doctors were baffled as to what was the root cause of her pain and how a terrible infection began. After two nights in the hospital and a series of tests, the diagnosis was "Strep Throat!" Apparently, a person can get strep throat and not show many symptoms. This happened to my mom. She had a very bad sore throat in November. The pain and fever went away on its own after about two days. However, the strep infection did not...only antibiotics can wipe out strep. The infection went to her knee (although she also does have strep in her throat). Again, this is a rare but not unheard of condition. The results could have been fatal. Oftentimes when these types of infections occur, they travel to the blood stream and the heart. My mom will have to get some more test completed to make sure her heart has not been infected. She is still in the hospital and will most likely remain there until Tuesday. I've spoken with her this morning and she is in a tremendous amount of pain. Tomorrow she will have a port put in her body so she can administer antibiotics when she returns home. She will need to be on strong antibiotics for six-weeks. Thank you for praying for her at this time and I ask that you continue to lift her up.

Angela,
I will be praying for your mom. I know someone who did get the Strep in their heart and yes, it is very dangerous. Bryant once got Strep in his eye, which was very scary. My nephew had to be hospitalized for Strep in a cut in his finger- it was very serious too.
Now that they know what's going on with your mom, it should be fairly smooth sailing once the antibiotics kick in. Poor thing!

Wow. I had never heard of this before. I was strep B positive during my pregnancies, but didn't realize that a strep infection could start in the throat and then travel.

Angela, Oh my...I have not heard of this before. It does sound very scary though. It seems like your Mom is doing very well - whereas they have identified this rare thing. We will add her on the prayer list. Please send me her name via email. Keep us updated.
