Sick Day

Sweet little Xylie bear is homebound today. We had plans to start her first official class at The Little Gym and go to the dentist, but instead she's lying on the couch with a box of tissues nursing a glass of apple juice. The common cold has caught her and we are going to have a snuggly day today.

She's especially sad about missing the Little Gym (although they'll let her make up the class) and is almost as sad about missing the dentist appointment. Xylie loves going to the dentist and has been three times for regular check ups when we lived in Corpus.

I decided to post some memories of her first dental visit (Her birthday is Friday and I'm feeling Nostalgic).

February 6, 2006

Today was Xylie's first dentist appointment. Our dentist does free "Happy Visits" for little ones until they are old enough to sit through a cleaning. Needless to say, I was not looking forward to the visit and thought that no two-year-old was going to like getting her teeth examined. This is, after all, the same strong-willed pixie who yelled at the nurse after she gave her a “boo-boo” (vaccination). I envisioned Xylie stomping into the dentist’s office, stammering "No" and clamping her mouth shut. Boy was I wrong! She LOVED it!!!

The dentist and hygienists were wonderful and made the experience fun. She sat in the big blue chair and immediately put her arms on the arm rests. When the hygienist asked her to open wide, Xylie said, "Like Alligator!!!!!!" The hygienist laughed and said "yes, wide like an alligator."

She got her teeth counted and then it was time for them to be polished. "This is it, I thought, here comes the clamping and screaming." But as soon as the hygienist mentioned the magic "P" word (and I don't mean please), my little charge proved me wrong once again. The hygienist got out some pink tooth paste and asked Xylie, "Can I polish your teeth like a princess?" Xylie squealed "YES" and even put the tooth paste on herself. The hygienist let Xylie touch all the equipment first. As she was getting her teeth polished, the hygienist introduced Xylie to "Mr. Slurpee" the machine that sucks the water out of your mouth. Xylie put that right in to suck out the water. And she loved it when the hygienist would squirt water in her mouth. She was allowed to squirt it in herself and use "Mr. Slurpee" as often as she wanted to do so, which was every few seconds.

The dentist then came in to look at her pretty teeth. He said that she has a beautiful smile and can tell that she brushes her teeth often. He also said that he can already tell that she'll need braces in about 12 years! But for now, all 16 of her teeth are fine and she will get four more sometime this year. When it was time for her to get off the chair, she asked the dentist if she could slide down! He laughed and said yes and she slid down the chair. She received a new tooth brush, sticker and coloring book. And if you ask Xylie to smile, she'll proudly tell you she has "Pin-Siss Teef," and give you a giant alligator grin.

Feel better, little Xylie! Topher says, "Cough, Xylie, you have to get better cough before you turn cough four!"

BTW, you've been TAGGED! Stop by for the rules.
