I know that there is money to be saved by making my own household cleaners, but I am not there yet. Not entirely. When cleaning items like toilets, floors, and stove tops, I need to smell the clean. But household cleansers are also pricey. And having two kids and a dog with epilepsy also means we need a heavy duty carpet cleaner. At about $4.00 a bottle, cleaning products can add up in a hurry. So what is my solution? Big Lots and Dollar stores like Dollar General and Family Dollar.
Out of the three, my favorite is Big Lots. I have found heavy duty name brand carpet cleaners and other household cleansers for as low as a dollar and no higher than $2.50. In addition to household cleaners, Big lots is a great place to find wipes, makeup, cereal, and kids birthday presents. They even have furniture. I do recommend checking expiration dates, especially for food items, but I have never purchased anything spoiled.
I plan my Big Lots/Dollar Store trips around other errands like grocery shopping or going to a MOPS meeting so I am not wasting gas by making additional trips. And fortunately for me, these stores are close by my church and grocery store.

I am a Big Lot's girl also. I buy a lot of food items there - especially spices. They are a fraction of the cost from Publix. Bug's current car seat - an Eddie Bauer - came from Big Lot's. I think I paid $40 for it. It retailed in other stores for $80. I don't know how they do it - but they offer really good prices. We were there last night and they had an entire shelf of Nutri System Weight Loss meals dirt cheap.
Gotta love Big Lots!!
Great tip! I always forget you can buy things at those places so much cheaper. I think I'll head over there tomorrow!
