My Day In Numbers

Not complaining...just fact stating.

Today I have:

A body temperature of 100.5 Or, simply stated, 1 fever.

2 sick children at home

1 sick husband at work

1 raging headache

1 queasy stomach

1 clingy two-year-old who is over his required breathing treatments

14 dirty dishes in my sink

35 clean dishes in my dishwasher

28 books on the living room floor that Z-man knocked off the book shelf

2 unmade beds

1 fairly empty refrigerator

3 writing deadlines

and despite it all....

An uncountable number of blessings.

1 Peter 1:8 (New International Version)

8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

Departing Wisdom--Sincerely Fro Me To You

Today (I'm preposting---so actually Thursday, March 12) I will be given a sleepy cocktail and when I wake up, two upper impacted third molars of mine will be gone forever.

As I anticipate this procedure, it reminds me of my first experience with dental surgery 11 years ago.

You see, I have weird teeth...just weird...so weird I don't really want to talk about it. But I'll share one thing. While in my 20's I learned that two upper chewers of mine were baby teeth. The molars above never fully formed, but had started to protrude...had it continued, lots of unpleasantness would have ensued. So, I had to get the babies pulled and the juvenile delinquents extracted.

According to my oral surgeon, who obviously interned at Little Shop of Horrors, told me he would have to do "lots of sawing" which would cause, "blood to go gushing." He recommended I be put under anesthesia to avoid trauma. And I replied, "You at me at blood gushing." Well, actually I didn't because this happened pre Jerry Maguire...but he did have me at "blood gushing."

Well...back in 1998, I weighed a whopping 100 pounds...and I thought I was fat, but that's another story.

As I sat in "the chair" with an IV in my arm and a gas mask about to go over my pried open mouth, I saw a look of horror on the face of the nurse as she looked at my chart, the meds, and the assistant who drugged me. The nurse exclaimed, "You gave her XXXcc's? That's way more than what she should have had...she only weighs 100 pounds."

I remember trying to raise my hand while screaming in my head "Don't go to sleep Angela...fight it...do not go to sleep."

As a fog came over me I honestly remember thinking, "I'm going to meet Jesus."

Then I was out.

But I woke up. And I was told that I imagined the whole horror situation...but I know...absolutely know...it. was. real.

For more fun stories or pictures from memory lane please visit the fun blog carnival "Sincerely Fro Me to You" at Glamorous Life Association.

I will be in la la land for most of today...but it is funny how perspective changes once one becomes a mommy...I'm actually not dreading the procedure...it means I get a break. How sad is that?

Crazy Lady

(I also printed a version of this on Becoming Me, bu since it got such a good response, I thought I'd run it here as well)

Dear Sweet Target Customer:

Please accept my sincere words of gratitude for your act of kindness toward the almost cartoonish woman who stood ahead of you in line one day last week. She will be referred to hence forth as Crazy Lady. I know that I voice the opinion of the cashier, as well as dozens of patrons when I write that without you handing that disheveled and frantic lady the 58 cents she was digging in her purse to find...the chaotic scene may have gotten uglier.

Many people were irritated with this strange woman wearing a clenched plastic smile long before she got in line with her screaming toddler. I noticed that a middle-age woman with red hair and rimless glasses huffed loudly when the aforementioned toddler managed to wrap his pudgy little fingers around a few plastic cups...sending them rolling down aisle six.

A tall young woman examining coffee pots with her fiance whispered, "yeah, like what that kid needs is sugar," upon noticing that Crazy Lady plopped a Hershey's Kiss into the wide open mouth of the rankled tot...a feeble attempt to secure temporary peace.

And did you see her accidentally ram carts with an elderly gentlemen just as he picked up a large container of laundry detergent? The poor man lost his balance, but fortunately remained on his feet. At least the Crazy Lady offered the fellow a heartfelt apology before darting toward the checkout lanes and muttering something about the ineffectiveness of the caffeinated/decaffeinated coffee blend she drank for breakfast.

With the above-referenced facts in mind, I felt no surprise when Crazy Lady unraveled when she discovered she had forgotten her wallet. She handed a Target gift card to the young man wearing the red vest and stuttered, "Oh my goodness...I am so sorry...uh...ummm...I...uh..forgot my wallet....I'm sure I have the change you need somewhere in my purse."

The cashier rolled his eyes and fellow Target patrons sighed and shifted their weight from foot to foot while waiting for Crazy Lady to find two quarters, a nickel, and three pennies...their collective level of patience only slighter greater than that belonging to the wailing little boy sitting in Crazy Lady's shopping cart.

Finally, Crazy Lady surrendered. One could obviously tell that this woman was hanging on by only a proverbial frayed thread. She lifted up her hands and with tears welled up in her eyes stammered, "Look, I'm so sorry, but I can only find two dimes....just take something back..I don't care what you take back....just pick something and take it back. I'm sorry...I'm so so so so sorry."

And that is when you, Sweet Target Customer, came to the aid of Crazy Lady, the frazzled clerk, the squalling toddler, and everyone standing in lane twelve at precisely 10:53 a.m. on that one blustery morning when Murphy and his crooked law triumphed.

"It's O.K. ma'am," you said in a gentle voice while handing change to the cashier. "It is impossible to think or find anything when you have a crying baby. I've been there...I've had three of them."

Crazy Lady thanked you, kissed her toddler, grabbed the plastic bag containing her purchase and left the store. Everyone was relieved...all because you demonstrated kindness to a screwy stranger. I hope that I remember and mimick your merciful spirit should I ever find myself in a similar situation as you did.

With both appreciation and admiration,
Crazy Lady

A new look for my bedroom

I'm not crafty. Have you ever heard the cliche She cannot draw a straight line with a ruler? I think it was first said in the early 80's...and I'm pretty sure I was the "she." Think I'm exaggerating? I'm not.

I've tried scrapbooking, cake decorating, and sewing. I have a few completed projects, but none of them noteworthy. Still, despite of...or perhaps in spite of my lack of talent for the genre of arts and crafts...I try.

After this last move, we ended up with an old piece of plywood. Not very pretty. But I didn't see just an ugly slab of conglomerated wood chips...I saw a head board. Dr. N and I don't have a bedroom set, so our queen sized bed still sets on the metal frame. We're both fine with that. But I have been wanting to add some decorative pizazz to our bedroom.

So, I went to Lowes, bought two cans of sample paints and some supplies and got busy. I also purchased some wall stickers from Target. Although the stickers look tacky in the photos, they honestly do not in person...in fact, I think it is difficult to determine that they are stickers.

Well, it's not perfect and the lines are not straight, but I think it adds a certain charm. What do you think?

Sweet Baby Jesus

The baby Jesus that is a part of our resin nativity scene is much loved. Here are a few remarks/commands I've made to my children regarding the swaddled babe.

To Both Children

"Do not fight over baby Jesus. Fighting makes Jesus sad."

To Z-Man

"Do not put baby Jesus in your mouth!"

"Do not throw baby Jesus at your sister!"

"Do not bang baby Jesus on the coffee table, you'll give him a boo-boo."

"Do not put baby Jesus in the trash can."

"This baby Jesus is not allowed to take a bath."

To X-Factor

"Z-man would not have baby Jesus if you hadn't taken him from the manger."

"Do not tease your brother with baby Jesus. Jesus is for everybody and does not like to hear little girls say 'na na na na naaaa.'".

"Do not put baby Jesus in your purse."

"No, baby Jesus does not want to go to Wal-Mart with us."

"Do not put baby Jesus in your toy box."

"Yes honey, I know Jesus is the King of Kings, but He has a throne in Heaven, please do not put the baby Jesus in your princess castle."

"What a beautiful lullaby. I'm sure He'll sleep much better now."

To Myself

"Someone really needs to make a Jewish Baby Jesus who looks like He was born in Bethlehem...not Sweden."

Worst Mother Ever

Yesterday was "Show and Tell" at X-Factor's school. Guess which mom flaked out and sent her child to school on such a special day empty-handed? Yep. Grrr.

I'm thankful that my sweet girl with a grace-filled heart was quick to forgive. "That's OK mommy, I wasn't the only one with no show to tell about. Just remember next time OK?"

Morning Breath in the Afternoon

After we left the H. Family Farm last Saturday, we passed through Macon, Georgia and stopped at Barnes And Noble to see Mike Huckabee. Most of you already know that Dr. N and I campaigned for Huckabee during the primaries and even went to an event in S.C.

Macon is about 2.5 hours from the farm and on the way there, this tired mama fell asleep! When we arrived, my hair was matted, eyeliner smeared, and my breath was almost as nasty as it was at seven that morning when I first rolled out of bed.

As Murphey's law would have it, my cosmetic case complete with toothbrush and paste was buried deep within the trunk and I could find neither a mint or a piece of gum. So...I rinsed out my mouth with water, bought my book, clamped my mouth tight and stood in line with about 400 others to see Mike.

While I was in line, Dr. N was entertaining the kids in the children's area...it was a nice set up.

As my turn approached, I asked the woman behind me if she would take my picture. She agreed, but the line was moving so quickly that she captured on Huckabee, his cute assistant, and my hand in the picture. Perhaps that was a good thing. My hand is in the lower left corner holding a book.

Here are some shots with us and the Huckabee's last year.

Janet Huckabee is a lovely woman. She heard Z-man crying and rucshed over to pick him up. I promise you, he was crying long before she held him. She even helped calm him down a bit.

If Dogs Could Say Yummo...

Memo to Rachael Ray:
Dear Rach,

May I call you Rach? I feel as though I can. After all, I've been a fan of yours before fame and fortune barged into your kitchen. In fact, I give you most of the credit for teaching me how to cook; and owe you big time for freeing me from the bondage of precise measuring. Thank you.

Yes, it did take me some time to get use to your laugh, but after two episodes, I determined it was sincere. Plus, from day one, I hearted you for making words like "yummo" and "delish" cool, because my husband can attest to the fact that I've been using such words since 1999. Yep, I've been quirky before you made quirky cool. Again, thank you.

Due to the recent climb of your celebrity status from the Appalachians to the top of Mt. Everest, some have turned against you...even dared to call you a sell-out. Not me. I've stood firm as your fan and recipes from your cookbooks are used in my kitchen often. When my friends diss you, I have your back. But Rach, you must know that your newest product decision is harder to defend.

I'm talking about your dog food line, Nutrish. Dog food? You do realize that you've gone from creating fantastic recipes like Spinach and Goat Cheese Chicken Rolls, and Rosemary Corncake with a Prochutto Salad to concocting kibble for K-9's?

I understand your love for sweet Isaboo and commend you for donating proceeds to your pet charity...but this move has me shaking my head as I move onion peices to the garbage bowl. Now the garbage bowl...that idea was FABBO-LISH!

DIY - Craft Table Make-Over

The kids craft table was looking rather gross. After a trip to Michaels, the X-Factor and I cleaned it and then gave it a face lift ala jungle animals. Here are the results.

Top 5: Best Things About Moving

Moving stinks. I hate it. There are, however, some benefits. This is my attempt to look at the silver lining as I sit here with a terribly sore back, surrounded by unpacked boxes.

  1. I get to drive the truck. I'm one of the guys who likes to watch those shows on the Discovery Channel about real masculine jobs, where they get to operate heavy machinery. I may never get to work on an oil rig, but at least I can drive a moving truck every once and a while.
  2. I appreciate good friends more. I've moved 8 times since 1999. In all these moves, we've had incredible friends who helped out in amazing, selfless ways. This move was no exception.
  3. I get rid of a lot of useless stuff. Since I want to move as little stuff as possible, I always end up getting rid of stuff that hasn't seen the light of day since, well, the last move. So, looking at it this way, moving is a very cleansing experience.
  4. I clean parts of furniture that normally don't get cleaned. Moving is an excellent opportunity to clean behind desks, the tops of bookshelves, and such.
  5. I get to eat out more. Since I don't have access to cooking facilities for at least several days during the move, it's a convenient excuse to try some dining establishments that I otherwise would not be able to justify because of the cost.
Whew! That was tough. Mostly, moving just plain stinks. I wasn't sure if I would be able to come up with 5. Can you think of any others?

Housing Update

Sigh! It has been a busy few days...packing, cleaning, loading, driving with kids, house hunting, etc.

Last week we went to Georgia and spent a day and a half looking for a new home. We were set on an adorable and spacious townhouse with hardwood floors and a newly renovated kitchen. When we were prepared to sign the lease, the agent realized a mistake...the place had already been rented!

Our plans B and C also fell through. But all went well in the end. Dr. N pulled into an older but well maintained apartment complex, asked the agent if there were any three bedroom units available and we toured what will be our new home.

I'll be honest, I was expecting the place to be a wreck inside, but it looked darling. Very spacious with a full sized kitchen and three bedrooms. The X-Factor is overjoyed that she will have her own bedroom and be able to once again set up her princess castle tent.

The blogs will be on the back burner until we get settled. We're packing like crazy and will be Georgia bound on Friday morning.

Simplifying My Schedule – WWFMW

This past Sunday, our pastor talked about the importance of simplification and how less can be more. My head nodded in agreement as he discussed simplifying priorities, commitments, schedules, and possessions. My marriage started with me wanting more and now, nine years and two kids later, I regret many of my early materialistic tendencies. More and more I am learning to simplify my life. You should see how my shoe collection has thinned out! I went from having many pairs of inexpensive shoes to a few pairs of still inexpensive and two pairs of moderately priced footwear. And just yesterday, Dr. N and I were saying that we should just get Z-man one or two pair of PediPed shoes, keep his crocs for the pool and throw out the rest.

But as far as simplifying my life, I am getting there. Clutter still surrounds me. But one area of simplification in which I’ve made great improvements is in simplifying our schedules and that’s what I’d like to share with you today for this edition of What Works for Me Wednesday.

When the X-Factor was just 18-months old, our schedules were crammed. We had at least one activity planned every day of the week in addition to grocery shopping, running errands and other daily chores. I’m a go-getter. A woman of action, so I thought that becoming a mommy of action would be a piece of cake. It was more like cake left in the oven 30 minutes too long. Once, after leaving story time in a rush to get to a playdate on the other side of town, the X-Factor threw her little body on the blacktopped parking lot, kicking, screaming and rolling in order to avoid getting strapped into her car seat. We were over doing life and needed to slow down. Here’s what I did (Please keep in mind, this didn’t happen overnight, it took me some time to change).

List my Priorities – Time with God, my family, and my friends are numbers 1 through 3 on my list of priorities and number 4 is to use my writing to glorify God. I realize that I need to keep them as such. And then I need to prioritize the time I would spend with my family, such as, education, playtime, etc.

Learn to Enjoy Time At Home – I’m a city girl. I like to be out and about. When we lived in Washington, D.C., I enjoyed nothing more than hopping on the metro and heading to the museums. But little growing bodies need more rest and down time. So I am working on creating time in our home life that is fun and relaxing and educational as well.

Only Add Commitments that will Add Light to Relationships – While I was rushing from playgroup to playgroup, I was spending very little quality time with my daughter or my friends. I was often too distracted and tired to fully enjoy adult conversations. Plus by the end of the day, I was irritable and my husband got the worst of me. So I decided that I would make sure that our commitments would enhance our relationships. For me, these include X-Factor’s non-competitive gymnastic classes, MOPS, Church, and Bible Studies. Those are our solid obligations and then each week I schedule something special, like a playdate, library time, etc., but I make sure that we don’t have every day full to the brim.

Pray before Adding Commitments - There are so many great activities and ministries to join. Often I am asked to be on planning committees and leadership teams and I use to say yes to each and every request. No, I don’t make any commitment decisions without first spending time in prayer.

Learn to Say No – Though its monosybolic, it’s the most difficult word to say. I can spout out supercalifragilisticexpealadocious faster than I can tell someone no. But trust me, it is a very important word to say. Once my priorities were strait, I was able to learn how to say no without feeling guilt.

I hope those tips are helpful to you. For more great tips, see Shannon at Rocks in My Dyer.

What is up with this week???

Perhaps X-factor is my good luck charm, because this sure has not been a good week. First my toe, then the creepy ice-cream sharing guy at Big Lots and now.... car trouble.

I went to Sears for a routine oil change and the mechanic discovered a screw stuck in the inside of one tires and a broken metal spiral thingy. I don't actually think he used the technical term metal spiral thingy, but he showed me the damage and that's the image that stuck. Apparently, my tire can blow at any minute. The really bad news...it will cost $448 to fix. I had no choice at that moment, I had to drive home. My cell phone is not working, so I could not call Dr. N at work and I didn't have that kind of money on me.

I was born and raised in Central Pennsylvania and Central Pennsylvanians do not calculate distance in miles, they calculate in time. This week, I need to take Z-man to the pediatrician and his office is about 15 minutes from our place. So that would be a 1/2 hour of driving. The Sears is a good 20-25 minutes from my place...so total, that would be an hour of driving a car with a tire that could blow at any given moment...ugh.

Brand Names at Bargain Prices

I know that there is money to be saved by making my own household cleaners, but I am not there yet. Not entirely. When cleaning items like toilets, floors, and stove tops, I need to smell the clean. But household cleansers are also pricey. And having two kids and a dog with epilepsy also means we need a heavy duty carpet cleaner. At about $4.00 a bottle, cleaning products can add up in a hurry. So what is my solution? Big Lots and Dollar stores like Dollar General and Family Dollar.

Out of the three, my favorite is Big Lots. I have found heavy duty name brand carpet cleaners and other household cleansers for as low as a dollar and no higher than $2.50. In addition to household cleaners, Big lots is a great place to find wipes, makeup, cereal, and kids birthday presents. They even have furniture. I do recommend checking expiration dates, especially for food items, but I have never purchased anything spoiled.

I plan my Big Lots/Dollar Store trips around other errands like grocery shopping or going to a MOPS meeting so I am not wasting gas by making additional trips. And fortunately for me, these stores are close by my church and grocery store.

The Reach Access Flosser

This is our first Works for Me Wednesday, sponsored by Rocks in My Dryer. We're starting off with an unpopular subject of sorts. Flossing. Honestly, I was never much of a flosser. I just forgot to do it. However, my flossing life changed forever when I met this handy dandy item: The Reach Access Flosser.

The first week I discovered this flosser, I used it twice a day. To my defense, my braces had been removed earlier that week and any type of flossing without threading would have felt heavenly. I've since cut back and floss 3-4 times a week. Dr. N. flosses more often as well.

The flosser enables one to easily floss between those hard to reach back teeth. It is true, that the flosser costs more than a pack of traditional floss, but the ease pays for itself in the end. My dentist told me that the flosser refills can be reused if rinsed with with mouth wash.

To help turn the X-Factor into a star in the oral hygiene department, we bought her a similar flossing item: animal shaped flossing picks. She loves them and can floss by herself with ease.

Dear Sonic

Dear Sonic:

Forgetting the bacon and cheese on one's Bacon, Cheese, and Ranch Grilled Chicken Sandwich borders cruelty. In fact, had a less understanding person been the recipient of this order faux pas, cruel just may be the word he might use.

Turn a blind eye to the fact that I am two sizes larger than last year and swimsuit season is approaching (Help Me Antique Mommy). Ignore my recent pledge of healthy eating habits. When a woman orders a product containing bacon or chocolate there is a need for that order transcending all logical rationale.

Additionally when a kid's meal is ordered, please treat that request with extra care. It is difficult for a bacon craving hormonally unbalanced mama to tolerate indigent whining from a four-year-old whose "plain and dry" cheeseburger arrived with FIVE pickles and mustard.

A regret

I usually do not regret E-mails that I send out. I was once infamous for sending forwards, but as I became a more savvy user of the Web, the more careful I became about sending out information. But yesterday, I forwarded an E-mail with a video link about the religious beliefs of Oprah Winfrey and I now have a few regrets.

I did view the video before sending and I had a few reservations, but I sent it along anyway because I felt that the message about Oprah was more important than the way the video was produced.

The truth is, Oprah does subscribe to a New Age world view. In the early 80's she professed Christianity but since changed her mind. Being the powerful leader that she is, which to her credit has a lot to do with her compassionate heart, many people are following her lead and believing that any road can lead to Heaven or "the light" as Oprah now calls it. So that is why I forwarded the E-mail. I wanted others to know about her stance on Christianity and about how dangerous her influence can be.

However, the video was not well-produced. I mean, it looked pretty. But, as Napp pointed out, it was in many ways a sneaky negative ad campaign against Obama as much as it was against Oprah. He makes a good point and I am seeing the video now more as propaganda.

I guess the point of this is to say that well I think Oprah's views are appalling, I think there should be better tactics used against it. And if you were someone who also sent around the link, please don't take this post as a personal criticism. It's just me sharing a new perspective.

Fridays Fabulous Finds On Saturday Night

It's been a crazy week, so much so that I almost forgot the meme I started last week. I am recommending three blogs this week. The first two are tearjerkers, but must reads, and the third is usually a fun read.

Bring The Rain - This is a beautifully written blog about a baby girl, Audrey Caroline ,by her mother, Angela. Little Audrey has not yet been born, but has been given a startling prognosis. Unless God intervenes with a miracle, this little one will not live long outside her mother's womb. Little Audrey has three older sisters and two loving parents. Her father, Todd, is part of the Christian band Selah. It is a tough read, but a blessed one. Please take time to pray for this lovely family.

Confessions of A CF Husband - This blog chronicles the life of a husband whose wife has Cystic Fibrosis. Recently, his wife, Tricia, received a lung transplant and will have more years to live with her family on earth. Another miracle in this story is the premature birth of their daughter. Both mother and daughter are in the hospital but should be home soon.

Baby Bangs - I'm sure that you have all heard about my favorite author Beth Moore. Baby Bangs is the blog of Beth's oldest daughter, Amanda Jones. Amanda blogs about her life as a work-at-home mom to her two-year-old son, Jackson, and various experiences as a pastor's wife, and a woman active in ministry. It's a fun blog. Amanda has her mother's wit and kind heart for sure.

Friday's Fabulous Finds

I'm starting my own Meme. I'll see whether or not I keep up with it and if it takes off. I don't know how to make cute little graphics (actually, I do know how to make cute little graphics I just don't have the software to do so.)

Anyway, every Friday I am going to post a few new sites (no more than 3) that I just love. Wanna play? It's easy. Just post a comment to tell people that you're playing along. Then post at least one fabulous find on your site.

Here are my Fabulous Finds (I'm posting the Web/Blog title and description)

Life in the Parsonage - In the Author's Words
I'm a stay at home wife to Ben and mom to three little guys. Two years ago my husband became the pastor of a cute little church in a tiny little town. Here, my identity changed forever...I'm now "The Pastor's Wife." ME?!? Still makes me laugh a little every time someone introduces me that way. We live in the adorable house, next to the church...also known as the parsonage :) I like finding the humor in everyday life & I tend to be a tad bit random...best wishes keeping up!

In my words, Sarah is a riot. She is an excellent writer who sprinkles spunk and wit into each of her posts.

The Shame Factor
A blog to explore shame and why secrets are so destructive. Tiffany is working on a women's non-fiction book about shame. I want to represent the voices of many women and ultimately point to freedom through Christ.
