Movie Review Angel Style - I Am Legend

I Am Legend

Since I only watch T.V. when my children are sleeping, and then with TIVO (which means no commercials) I'm not up on movie previews. Usually, that's fine by me, because too often previews spoil the movie.

Tonight, we watched I Am Legend, and I do wish I had been privy to the pythonic Horror/Zombie creature component to the film. That knowledge may have prevented me from screaming out loud. Fortunately, none of the zombies spat or blew his nose, so I held it together.

Since it was not a straight horror flick and starred one of my favorite actors, I'll stick my thumb up for this picture....not high-in-the-sky-up, because watching flesh-eating zombies leap through a desolate NYC nighttime sky does not do much to invoke pleasant dreams...but up and slightly waving.

Here's what I liked:

  • The acting
  • The pacing
  • The special effects
  • The yearning for human contact
  • The spiritual aspect
The movie had a few poignant lines such as Smith's character saying "God didn't do this, we did this" regarding a nightmarish result of curing cancer. Toward the end of the movie, there were well written lines about God having a plan and leading the the lives of the characters. And, the ending wasn't cliche', and I always go for a non-cookie cutter ending. That's actually not true. Ever see Somersby? The ending ticked me off.

What I didn't like:

  • Seeing a destroyed NYC. I know this was based on a book, but after 9/11 I still have a difficult time watching movies where a future ground zero is in NYC.
  • Flesh seeking/eating zombies
  • Lab experiments.
Well, there you have it, my first All That Naz movie review. Probably my last as well. Hopefully, my dreams won't be too violent tonight. Sometime I'll have to write about my dreams after I saw the movies "The Sixth Sense" and "What Lies Beneath." And then there was that time that my sister JeanAnn tricked me into watching "Scream," which she said was actually a comedy. Oh yes she did!

Our next netflick is Enchanted? Anyone know if PD is old enough to see this one? And in case you were wondering, Enchanted was my pick and I Am Legend, N's.

Enchanted was very cute. I think PD is old enough to enjoy it. We all liked it.
I still haven't decided how I feel about I Am Legend. I read the novella after seeing the movie, and the only thing the book and the movie had in common was the title. The book was a total waste of time.

Ted and I saw that in the theater and half way through Ted looked at me and said, "Should we leave? This is the creepiest movie ever." We stayed to the end because you have to know how it ends and we are glad we did. I agree with your review. Great movie in a lot of ways, but very creepy. Those other movies you mentioned didn't bother me a bit. Loved them. I'm not easily bothered. The previews didn't tell you about the creatures.

Gene saw this and liked it pretty well. I have not seen it yet but I'm sure I will one day because I, like you, really like Will Smith!!! Thanks for the review. I appreciate how you listed your likes and dislikes....you should do more reviews! Don't let this be your last!

We just watched Legend, too. I enjoyed it, except of course for the zombies. I love a movie that makes me think and explores interesting themes without going too overboard.

I loved both movies! Enchanted and I am Legend. There is a scary part in Enchanted toward the end, typical of Sleeping Beauty dragon stuff.

My almost-3-year-old LOVES Enchanted! I don't know how old PD is but it's a movie for ALL AGES!!! I heart Amy Adams! And she sings just like a Disney Princess would. I love how Disney makes fun of themselves in this too!

We just bought I Am Legend but haven't watched it yet! Thanks for the great review!!!

Hi, it's Charis! I was just catching up on your blog and was surprised by your review because I watched I am Legend recently and haven't been able to really talk with anyone about it besides dh. I really found it interesting (scary too) and really wanted to go deeper into the idea of it all. I got the book from the library and have to agree with wellmannered. It was horrible and emphasized the "vampire" angle. I would like to read the screenplay. It seems like there is more there that they edited out/didn't have time for. Very thought provoking (the movie) ...

I saw this movie a month or so ago. I liked it too (sort of). It does teeter on the edge of horror, for me. I wish there wasn't that aspect to it, but I suppose it wouldn't be much of a movie without it. The acting was good and aside from the evil zombies I really enjoyed the movie.

I do a movie review at the first of each month on my blog about the movies that we saw the previous month. I think you can find my review of I Am Legend in Aprils review. :)
