Napp’s Lost Theory

Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched last night’s episode yet, don’t read any further.

After last night’s season finale, I think I have a good idea of what is going on with the mysterious island in Lost. Here’s my theory:

Jacob is Jesus. The other guy seen with Jacob in the opening scene is Satan. The island is where they are both allowed to live.

Think about this:

  1. Jacob and the other guy (let’s just assume I’m correct and call him Satan for now) were dressed similarly but Jacob had a white shirt and Satan had a black shirt.
  2. Jacob was seen fishing. The fish has long been used as a symbol of Jesus.
  3. Jacob healed John Locke.
  4. Jacob doesn’t age, knows how to make an Egyptian rug, and is fluent in many languages, all suggesting he has been around for a long time.
  5. Jacob lives in a foot statue. There is a reference in Genesis to Satan striking Man's heel.
"he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel" (3:15).
  6. The answer to the question, "what lies in the shadow of the statue?" was, in Latin, "He who will protect us." Thanks to Lostpedia for finding that one.
  7. The banter between Jacob and Satan was indicative of good versus evil themes that one might expect in a conversation between Jesus and Satan.
Satan: “Still trying to prove me wrong aren’t you?”
Jacob: “You are wrong.”
Satan: “Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.”
Jacob: “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that, it’s just progress.”

Some other things to consider, if my theory is correct:

The smoke monster serves, or is, Satan. Satan can take the form of any dead bodies that arrive on the island. He took the form of Jack’s dad and, later, John Locke. John Locke, Ben Linus, and Sayid were duped by Satan. They helped him carry out his (successful?) plan to kill Jacob.

The smoke monster confronted Mr. Eko twice. The first time it let him go. The second time, it killed him--after he had started constructing a church building.

Jacob’s cabin had been “used by someone else.” That someone else was Satan after taking the form of Jack’s dad.

Everything that has happened on the island is the result of this battle between Jacob and Satan.

My guess is that Jacob/Jesus had a plan of his own that involved Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Juliet, and (especially) Hurley (what’s in the guitar case?), which we’ll learn more about in the final season. I’m looking forward to it.

Update: In the comments, Dave P (an old friend and classics major in college) translated the latin phrase "Ille qui nos omnes servabit" as "The one who will save us all," which makes for an even more striking Jacob = Jesus connection.

Top 5: X-Factor's Favorite Non-Kid Shows

  1. American Idol: She will be starting her fourth season, and she's only five!
  2. Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee: Sandra must be the non-relative that she idolizes the most. She often mentions how pretty she is, and is impressed with her "table-scapes."
  3. Junk Brothers: We think she has a "kid-crush" on Jim (the one with blond hair).
  4. Good Eats: I think she like's the funny characters and unusual camera viewpoints on Alton Brown's show.
  5. Dancing With the Stars: Our little dancer has already made plans to compete on the show someday.
Some honorable mentions: America's Test Kitchen, Modern Marvels, and any show with Rachel Ray.

Mrs. N's Heroes Review

Perhaps it could be said that I am addicted to the NBC show Heroes. I don't know, addicted is a strong word. But if watching the show and then obsessing about the episode in both my sleeping and waking life for the next 24 hours is a qualifier, well then addicted I may be. Oh yeah, and there are those fan clubs I joined on Face book....

I will say that in the absence of Lost, this show about seemingly ordinary people who discover they have special abilities and then are given the Herculean task of saving the world, is my new guilty pleasure.

If you too are "addicted to Heroes" feel free to sign the Mr. Linky and post your own Heroes review about last night's episode.

Here are my thoughts in bullet point fashion (confession, this is a spur of the moment post).

  • Sweet domesticated Sylar is almost as creepy as evil Sylar
  • I am beginning to feel compassion and empathy for Sylar and frankly, that doesn't sit well
  • If Peter can heal himself, why does his future self have a huge scar on his face?
  • I'm wondering if Claire's Daddy (Noah) had a fling with Mother Petrelli years back---and if so will it be revealed that Noah is Sylar's daddy?
  • At first I liked the "new" Mohninder, after last night...not so much.
  • Note to Peter, before saving the world, please try to fix Mohinder...I cannot sleep at night knowing that my favorite charcter morphs into some type of snakish creature four years from now
  • Nathan, Nathan, Nathan...I was just starting to like you again...
  • Future Claire -- Uh, what's with the leather...
  • Nikki/Tracy/Barbara --I thought Nikki had a twin sister named Jessica? No? When will Barbara appear?
  • Hiro and Ando--what can I say? I love this duo.
  • Can't Matt Parkman ever be happy?
  • Is Daddy Peterili really alive? And if so, is he the one controlling both formulas?
That's all of I've for now...let the discussion begin. And if you want to write your own post, please do and then sign my Mr. Linky.

Top 5: Best Things About Moving

Moving stinks. I hate it. There are, however, some benefits. This is my attempt to look at the silver lining as I sit here with a terribly sore back, surrounded by unpacked boxes.

  1. I get to drive the truck. I'm one of the guys who likes to watch those shows on the Discovery Channel about real masculine jobs, where they get to operate heavy machinery. I may never get to work on an oil rig, but at least I can drive a moving truck every once and a while.
  2. I appreciate good friends more. I've moved 8 times since 1999. In all these moves, we've had incredible friends who helped out in amazing, selfless ways. This move was no exception.
  3. I get rid of a lot of useless stuff. Since I want to move as little stuff as possible, I always end up getting rid of stuff that hasn't seen the light of day since, well, the last move. So, looking at it this way, moving is a very cleansing experience.
  4. I clean parts of furniture that normally don't get cleaned. Moving is an excellent opportunity to clean behind desks, the tops of bookshelves, and such.
  5. I get to eat out more. Since I don't have access to cooking facilities for at least several days during the move, it's a convenient excuse to try some dining establishments that I otherwise would not be able to justify because of the cost.
Whew! That was tough. Mostly, moving just plain stinks. I wasn't sure if I would be able to come up with 5. Can you think of any others?

I'll be lost until 2009

Last night, Dr. N and I stayed awake until after mid-night watching the season finale of Lost. Since we have an online Bible study that meets at 9 on Thursdays, we waited an hour before watching the two-hour shocker. Thank you TIVO!! And because we are Lost addicts, there was no way we could watch just part of the episode.

As always, the writers treated us with a few answers and left us with a few dozen questions. But that's part of why I love the show. The biggest question of the night for me was, "How does baby Aaron stay alive and thrive without nourishment?" A five-week-old infant eat every two-three hours. Yet, little Aaron looks like a 15 pound chubby bundle despite the fact that no one is feeding him. Not even on a raft floating ten hours in the South Pacific. That's been my biggest pet peeve of the show and I couldn't write a review without stating that. And I am not alone. I read Shannon's post and she too had the same question as did many of her commentors (and with the #1 family/mommy blog, Shannon gets more comments in two hours than I get in a weeks worth of posts).

Here are some bulleted thought.

  • I loved how they ended last season with the coffin question only to give the answer a year later. And Last year, I thought, "it's got to be Ben or Locke in the coffin." But then as the season unfolded I thought...well that blows the Locke or Ben theory...Well, I guess not! Shows what I know. And the fact that Jeremy Bantham is an English Philospher like John Locke should have given me a hint, but I just was not going there.

  • I loved the Penny/Desmond ending and Ben better leave her alone.

  • The island moving...I cannot even go there. Time traveling bunnies...I loved that line.

  • GI Psycho Rambo freaked me out.

  • I still have lots of questions about "Never Aging Man."
  • I am starting to like Miles...in a creepy, can't stand him but he interests me kind of way.
  • Charlotte - now she interests me! Was she born on the island? Some say she is Annie, others theorize that Annie and Ben married and she died via pregnancy and looked like Juliette. And there is also a theory that Annie died during Ben's mass extermination.
  • Speaking of Jules I noticed her sigh at seeing Sawyer swim to shore...perhaps those to will bond.
  • What is going to happen to the people in the raft with Daniel.
  • Is Locke going to merge the survivors with Others?
  • I cried out loud when Sawyer jumped from the air plane. Who would have guessed in season 1 that he and not Jack would emerge the real hero of the show?
  • I also cried with Sun when Jin was blown up.
  • So Sun hates Jack now and blames him for Jin's death did I catch that correctly?
Ohhhh there is even more, but I am late to post this rambling!

Top 5: Most Annoying Kid Shows

Here is my follow up to the Least Annoying Kid Shows list. Except for number 1, these are, I think, decent shows for kids, I just hate to sit through them.

  1. Telletubbies: This one would also qualify for a "So Annoying My Toddler Won't Even Watch It" list. After watching a little bit of an episode, Pumpkindoodle said, "they're kinda creepy." Well said, little one.
  2. Barney & Friends: "I love you, you love me." No, Barney, I don't love you. You're annoying.
  3. Caillou: That voice, ugh! I rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard.
  4. Dora the Explorer: This was also on the "Pumkindoodle's Favorite Kid Shows" list. I love that she helps her learn Spanish, and there are some great lessons. But that repetition can drive an adult nutty.
  5. Sesame Street: I appreciate the celebrity appearances, such as R.E.M. singing "Furry, Happy Monsters" (which I love, see below). This might even make the Least Annoying Kid Shows list if they were to get rid of a certain giggly red furry monster that will remain unnamed (rhymes with Melmo).

Any shows that you think deserve an honorable mention?

Top 5: Least Annoying Kid Shows

With a preschooler in the house, I occasionally find myself watching TV with her. You've already seen X-factor's favorites. For some shows, this experience is less painful than others. Here is my list of the least annoying kid shows, in order of preference:

  1. Veggietales. This would actually belong on a "non-annoying kid shows" list, but since it would be the only show on the list, there wouldn't be much point. I look forward to watching these when a new one comes out. The characters are hilarious. I particularly like "Silly-songs with Larry."
  2. Bindi the Jungle Girl. At least I learn something about animals in the process.
  3. Wordgirl. Some of the humor in this show causes me to laugh out loud at times.
  4. Between the Lions. Some of the silliness and cultural references (Gewayne's World instead of Wayne's World) make it slightly bearable.
  5. Diego. Occasionally, I learn something about an obscure rain forest animal that I never heard of. (Diego, if you read this blog, let me apologize in advance--your cousin could appear on my upcoming "Top 5: Most Annoying Kid Shows" list.)
Any other shows that you think deserve recognition?

Wasting Time in Ghostville

I'm not much of a T.V. watcher these days. The Professor and I enjoy watching movies together and have some favorite shows, like Lost, but seldom can I be caught choosing T.V. for solo entertainment. This wasn't always the case, but within the past year, if I want to unwind alone, I usually write or read. However, on Sunday night, while folding laundry, I decided to watch T.V.

The Professor was wrapped up in his new Facebook hobby, so we didn't need to agree on the show. I keep a few guilty pleasures TIVO'd just in case I do watch something alone and decided that Ghost Whisperer would be the perfect background distraction to minimize the doldrums of laundry folding.

I'm not a horror movie type of girl, so in some ways, my interest in the show surprises me, but I have always liked intense drama and suspense. Plus in reality, Ghost Whisperer doesn't cause me to shake, scream or turn every light in the house on while watching. I think the fact that I can usually guess the ending kicker about 20 minutes into the show helps.

However there are two things I really like about Jennifer Love Hewitt's hit series.

1) Her wardrobe. If I had an unlimited clothing budget that obviously comes with being an Antique Shop owner and wife of a Paramedic, I would dress like JLH's character, Melinda. She's almost always wearing some sort of cute dress. I also love her collection of night gowns. Personally, I find long flowing night gowns too restricting for sleep, but I love the idea of them.

2) The relationship between Melinda and her husband Jim. Mainly, Jim's devotion to Melinda. It is not easy to find T.V. shows without feuding couples or relational angst. But in Ghost Whisperer, the couple have this incredible, bonding love. Not only that, the husband has great heroic one liners. My favorite from this past episode happened when Jim confronted Melinda's father in a threatening manner. Her father said something snarky like "Oh, Jim, I thought you were sworn to save lives." Jim's reply..."That comes in a roaring second after saving my wife." A roaring second. Love that!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, some of you are rolling your eyes (probably even my own husband--eh-hem), and some of you may think I'm a heathen for even watching a show about ghosts...and yes, I do recognize the corniness..but I just love scenes that depict strong marital ties.

LOST REVIEW

I decided to jump on the review bandwagon for my favorite show...LOST. About half of those reading this will be excited and the other half will yawn. I'll keep it quick.

Every episode gives me more questions and Jacob and I aren't tight, so I'm not getting answers from dream invading dead people. Here is my "want to know list:" Are you listening Jacob, because waiting four years for some of these answers is just too long...

1) Who is Ben's boss? Is he CIA? Counter CIA (Like SD6 on Alias)?

2) What was up with the strange foot statue a few seasons back?

3) Are the numbers the coordinates?

4) The smoke monster....please for the love of mercy tell me what is up with the smoke monster?

5) And what is up with dark and mysterious "Never-Aging Man?" (From hence forward the phrase "Never Aging Man" needs to be sung to the tune of Secret Agent Man)...He was an other before DARHMA came on...and is somehow older than Locke...oh there are like 30 questions just about this dude.

It was a great episode. I loved that Jack found out about Aaron, but suspected he did.

Oh, another question...the rescuers...are they with Ben or with Whitmore, because obviously they know something.

I also liked the dialog between Jack and Sawyer and how Sawyer's heart isn't so deeply hidden. And the island themed birthday party was great...the line from Hurley's mother about "Jesus Christ is not a weapon" was classic. I laughed out loud as she took the statue from his hands.

So, fellow Losties...comment away. And for more blog posts about Lost, check out Rocks in My Dryer.

"Live" American Idol Review

Xylie had an emotional day and handled it with the stride of a big girl. We decided to allow our four-year-old critic to stay up an hour later and watch American Idol. As many of you know, she is a fan of Kristy-Lee Cook and Brooke White, but Kristy is her very favorite. Is there a four-year-old girl on the planet who wouldn't look up to a pretty young lady who loves horses?

She really didn't have much to say during the first few performances.

After Kristy sang, Xylie clapped her hands and without coaching said the following: "I told you! If she could find the right singer song she will not be in the bottom three!" Then the judges took their turns and Pumpkindoodle silenced her enthusiasm until Simon made his positive remarks at which time Xylie exclaimed a boisterous "YEAH!!!! WOOO-HOOO!"

When David Lee took the stage Xylie had some thoughts that I am not sure anyone else would echo...."The song is kinda crunchy, I don't like that sound of music."

While Brooke was performing Xylie came close to me for a hug and said "This song makes me miss Hopee." After the "three" judged Brooke, Xylie dishearteningly responded..."Oh no, I am afraid my other favorite will be in the bottom three."

American Idol Results Show

Xylie is watching the American Idol results show and commenting as we go (She is sick today)

I like that they are all singing together. They sing good.

A group comes on the sing This Little Light of Mine : "I love this song. Oh, Uh, I'm not sure I like how they are singing it, oh, I think their hair and black clothes look a little disgusting, but they are not disgusting, they just need to get clean."

"Oh NO! Ramielle is in the bottom three. I like her. Oh, this is not good."

"Oh man. I do not like Kristy Lee being in the bottom three she is my best girl. I am sad."

Brooke is in the bottom three. Tears well up in Xylie's eyes and I wonder if this show is too much for her.

"This is so crazy! My favorite girls on in the bottom three. That means one of my favorites will go home. This is very sad."

About Dolly - "She is really a nice person. I like her squeaky voice and sparkles outfit."

Results are announced, Xylie begins to cry "Oh I will miss her so much."

Xylie's American Idol Review

Here is A Review of Last Night's American Idol from y four-year old critic:

Brooke - Simon is way wrong. She is beautiful and good and my favorite! (mommy agrees)

David Cook - I don't know if I like his song or not, it's just off (mommy agrees)

Ramielle- I really like her. She sings pretty and looks pretty and it's good to be little sometimes (Mommy sighs)

Jason Castro - I'm not really sure that is the song for him. I don't think I like him, but let's see what they have to say I think they will make him sad and that isn't nice. (Mommy sort of agrees)

Carly - Hmmm, she just seems a little bit nervous (Mommy says hmmm?)

David Archuletta - Wow, he is a beautiful singer! Wow!(Mommy agrees)

Kristy - hmmm, pretty good (I was surprised Xylie usually loves her) (Mommy thought Krisy did fine but would have liked it more without the band)

Seyesha - I want to like her but it was a little too roughish (Mommy doesn't quite understand)

Michael - I just don't know about him. His voice is too scratchy and I don't like that thing around his neck. Naw, he just doesn't have it. (Despite mommy pleading with her to change her mind)

Xylie Cowell??

Xylie loves watching American Idol. We were watching some of it today (Yeah TIVO). When one contestant started to sing a Whitney Houston song Xylie shook her head, frowned and said, "I think this is not the right song for her to be singing." Napp and I cracked up. What makes it funnier is that I am pretty sure that Xylie has never heard that song before.
